How To Pack A Suitcase Effectively

Most people hate packing, but it doesn’t have to be a horrendous chore.  When it comes to packing, I’m a big believer in starting off with a list so you can cover everything off. I know a lot of people aren’t big on lists though, and there are other things you need to think about as well. That’s why in this post, I’m going to tell you exactly how to pack a suitcase effectively so the whole process becomes a breeze!

Break It Down Into Categories

A great way to start packing is to break everything down into categories. You’ve got your clothes, underwear, shoes, toiletries/makeup etc. Once you know what categories you’ve got, you can work through them one at a time. Rule number one of knowing how to pack a suitcase: be organised. If possible, try and keep the categories separate within your case. It’ll be much easier to find things once you get there and unpack. Also, make sure your toiletries are well wrapped up, because the last thing you need is a leakage over your clothes!

Think About Your Trip

Where are you going? What will the temperature be like? What are you planning to do while you’re there? When thinking about how to pack suitcase, you need to consider these things to make sure you pack right. It can be easy to pack for just one eventuality and not think about other things. Checking the weather forecast for where you’re going is always a good shout. Weather forecasts are never going to be spot on, but it may give you some guidance on what to pack.

Note Down ‘Last-Minute’ Items

Your fiddly, last-minute items can often be the undoing of your otherwise perfect suitcase. It’s things like your toothbrush, your phone charger, your water bottle – all the things you’ll be using up to the last minute – that can easily be forgotten about. The night before I go anywhere, I always make a quick list of the smaller last-minute items that I need to remember to pack the following day. I would genuinely forget so much stuff if I didn’t!

Think Quantity

This is a hard one to balance, because you don’t want to take too much, but you definitely don’t want to take too little. It’s always best to be safe and pack some extra bits – within reason! Think about how many days you’re going away for, and how much stuff you’ll need in that time. You can even make a vague plan of the outfits you’re going to wear if you’re feeling super organised. There’s no point wasting money on buying extra stuff when you’re away, when it could have been avoided by planning your packing better.

Know The Restrictions

Don’t forget to think about restrictions when packing your suitcase! Know what your luggage allowance is and stick to it, and weigh your case before you leave. I usually use the bathroom scales which isn’t exactly ideal, but it gives me a rough idea! Also, make sure that you pack anything that you won’t be able to keep in your hand luggage into your suitcase before you leave, or you’ll end up getting it confiscated at security.

I might be strange, but I do actually enjoy packing! It gets me really excited for the trip, so I get fully psyched up. These little tips on how to pack a suitcase effectively will hopefully be helpful and make it more of fun task! Enjoy your travels 🙂

Thanks for sharing these tips. I’m travelling in a few weeks and this has been a nice quick helpful guide to get me packing effectively. Also, I recently heard about “packing cubes” and I found them to be a great way to keep my packing organised.

Have you heard of these before? And if so, what are your thoughts on them?

Thanks! I’m glad you found them helpful 🙂

I’ve never actually tried packing cubes myself, but for my next trip I’m definitely going to. I have two friends who absolutely love them – they’ve said they keep you organised, are super useful and have made their travels a lot easier. So based on that, I would say you should definitely give them a go!

This post is so helpful, especially during these times when people are about to pack for a vacation or a quick trip. I myself will be travelling next month so I find it so useful, we do it a lot but we don‘t really give a care how we could make packing easier and smoother. 🙂

I also started making a list of my smaller things because I was so forgetful!! Forget deodorant and toothbrush once, and you won’t make that mistake again! 🙂
